A great number of questions connected with peculiar ethnic and cultural development are considered in this work. The author is inclined to think that the question about ethnic groups is the most important and interesting in the ethnography of Mari republic. Thats why the main attention is paid to it, besides, the author reveals the structure, conditions and main tendencies of ethnos development in the rebublic.
