The study centers on the period of Muslim conquest of Sicily (IXth-XIth century). The first part presents the Byzantine rule, the Arab offensive in the Mediterranean and the hostilities between Byzantium and the Arabs of the island. The second part details the methods of governance and institutional life in the Arab period. It outlines similarities with Islamic possessions outside Sicily, as well as the characteristics of local government and local community. The third part identifies seven topics related to the island's intercultural relations, interactions with external Christian and Muslim lands, as well as the preserved material heritage.
