At the time of his death in early September 1948, Edvard Benes was perceived as a hero by the vast majority of Czechoslovak society. Regardless of the complex political and cultural realities, and without taking into account his real, not always successful, life story, he represented for many of his fellow citizens nothing less than the personification of courage, freedom, democracy, historical justice and historical satisfaction. The real Benes was far outweighed by the mythical Benes, whose image reflected the many fantasies, ideas, dreams, wishes, expectations, but also delusions that Czechoslovak society in the first half of the 20th century lived by and helped to shape. Through the mythical image of Edvard Benes, this book attempts to portray that multifaceted symbolic environment, its formation, forms and meaning.
