Poetry. Cities are not just places where people live, they are also homes for animals, birds and plants. The third collection by Maria Ilyashenko (born 1983), accompanied by illustrations by Ukrainian artist Mariko Gelman, is dedicated to them. Foxes rest in the shade of London telephone booths, trout monitor the purity of water in the Prague sewage treatment plant, wild peas flourish between the lanes of the city ring road. But let's not expect an idyll; at best, people ignore their neighbours or are superficially moved by them, at worst, they deny them the right to a home. The poems tell of habitats such as streams, wastelands, street canyons and green corridors, and of traps in the form of glass surfaces, thorns, skylights and bars. Is it possible to talk about animals and plants, or even speak in their voices, while avoiding simplification, instruction and anthropomorphization? It is necessary to at least try. Urban, natural and at the same time intimate lyrics about the everyday life of a pheasant, about the demon of cuteness, owls, rabbits, philodendron, cats and tomcats, and about living together with them.
