This collective paper is the first summary of ethnic and cultural history of the Carpathian-Dniester Lands in the early Middle Ages. An analysis of chronicles, evidence of ancient authors and archaeological data show that the North of the region was a part of the zone of primary Slavic ethnic genesis. The Carpathian-Dniester Lands became a borderline between Eastern and Western Slavs, to become later a contact zone for Eastern and Western branches of the Slavs. It was in the Xth century, when the Slavs of these lands joined the Kievan Rus' and participated in formation of early Russian ethnicity.
