This book was first published in 1978 in the USA. Subsequently, it became the first part of an autobiographical epic, which was published in the original language in 2010-2012 by the Kharkiv human rights group with the support of the Heinrich Boll Foundation in Ukraine. The Ukrainian edition is inspired by the fact that the Soviet dissident L. Kopelev (1912–1997) was born in Kyiv, educated in Kyiv and Kharkiv, preserved not only memories of pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary life in Ukraine, but also ardent love for the land, was friends with Ukrainian dissidents - the sixtiers.
However, the greatest value of these memories lies in the fact that they talk about the fatal bread harvests of the early 1930s, which led to the famine. These testimonies of a direct participant in the events are marked by the sincerity and bitterness of a belated confession. The memoirs of L. Kopelev combine vivid details with reflections on the origins of the tragedy of the genocide of an entire nation — precisely when the topic was taboo, when generations grew up who knew nothing about the famine of 1932-1933.
