The French scientific mission to Central Asia, which Paul Petlio led between 1906 and 1908, was a decisive moment in the history of the study of Central Asia, China, Buddhism and Nestorianism. Excerpts from Pelliot's travelogues, stored in the National Museum of Asian Arts Guimet in Paris and translated in this book, represent a unique document about the Kyrgyz of Alai in 1906. These pages record the extraordinary meeting of Asanbek, son of Kurmanjan Datka, with Pellio. The travel notes are accompanied by comments from Gzavier Allez and photographs of Char la Nuet, who participated in this famous expedition.
