Poland was a party to several military alliances in the 20th century. Those concluded until 1945 – with France, Romania, and Great Britain – were voluntary, serving the cause of independence. After World War II, the puppet government of the People's Republic of Poland gained international recognition, co-founding the Warsaw Pact in 1955 under the dictates of the USSR.
