Chronicles concentrate on themselves the attention of scholars not just as the most important historical source of Ancient Rus'. The history of early chronicle writing has long since become an independent area of research. What do we know about the origin of the text of The Chronicle of Bygone Years, the oldest surviving monument of Kyiv Rus historiography? For more than a hundred years most of the answers to this question have been based on the hypotheses of Alexei Shakhmatov (1864-1920), the most influential scholar of chronicle writing.
