Chronicles concentrate on themselves the attention of scholars not just as the most important historical source of Ancient Rus'. The history of early chronicle writing has long since become an independent area of research. What do we know about the origin of the text of The Chronicle of Bygone Years, the oldest surviving monument of Kyiv Rus historiography?
