The Irkutsk seven-year period of the life of Alexander Chekanovsky, an outstanding scientist exiled to Siberia for hard labor for participating in the January Uprising of 1863 in Poland, turned out to be the only one completely devoted to scientific research. The main page of his stay in Irkutsk was determined by his cooperation with the Siberian Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.
The book consistently analyzes each year of Chekanovsky's activity on the project of geological study of the Irkutsk province, which ended with the establishment of the Jurassic age of the coal-bearing formation.
