Aleksander Gierymski revolutionized Polish painting. The creator of extraordinary canvases, crossing the boundaries of realism, introduced new standards to Polish art at the turn of the 19th century. The son of a distinguished artistic family, brother of photographer and painter Maksymilian Gierymski, he was an extraordinary figure. He struggled with difficulties throughout his life - mental illness, lack of understanding, emigration - and despite this, he created works of extraordinary power of expression. The album presents Gierymski's full artistic path - from early realistic works to impressionistic paintings that changed the perception of Polish painting forever. Particular emphasis was placed on his most famous cycles: scenes from the Warsaw ghetto, Krakow churches, landscapes and portraits. Reproductions of the most important works, archival materials and a detailed historical context allow us to see Gierymski's work in all its complexity - as a testimony to an artistic revolution and an extraordinary talent.
