The economic upsurge in the Bulgarian land in the second and third quarter of the 19th century infused unprecedented dynamism into remote mountainous settlements. Such settlements provided the birthplace for national leaders in the struggle for modern education and culture, church autonomy and political independence. The present book debunks the dogmas about the clearcut opposition between "traditional" and "modern" and between "center" and "periphery". It also dispels the myth about Bulgaria's gateway location, showing that the remoteness of the Bulgarian land in terms of geography and infrastructure partly accounted for the asynchronous nature of the economic cycle in the national textile industry.
