The main character is a young (and by the end of the novel, not so young) surgeon from Ukraine, who, despite his father's accusation of betrayal of the Motherland, goes to work abroad to breathe in the intoxicating air of freedom. From the height of the terrace of his penthouse, he admires the night city that embraced him and in which he made a rapid career, becoming one of the ten most famous surgeons of our time. The novel consists of lyrical and philosophical dissections of reality, which are strung like beads on the central problem - the moral dilemma of a Ukrainian in emigration, the question of the deeply personal relationship between a Ukrainian - a son of his native land and a "mankurt" - a Ukrainian citizen of the world, which goes through generations.
