The topic of abortions has been voted on a total of 11 times in parliament since the establishment of the Slovak Republic. Conservatives as well as liberals, swordsmen and cauldrons are dealing with it, and the latest round of negotiations will start now this summer.
How far do the roots of today's cultural wars go, and why are they primarily concerned with the permissibility of abortion? What did people say about abortions, what about poor workers and what about the communist regime? Have the arguments in favor of women's rights changed in a hundred years? Abortion and contraception have been discussed in different contexts in the past, from family policy, nationalist fantasies about population growth and national health, and the sexual revolution, to human rights and genocide. The book by historian Miloslav Szabo provides authentic contemporary testimonies and shows that today's controversy over abortion cannot be separated from the controversies that stretched throughout the 20th century.
The monograph seeks answers to these and many other questions in the context of Slovak and Central European history of the 20th century, but also deals with the abortion controversy, which is regularly opened by conservatives and liberals in the 21st century - in parliament, in election campaigns and during public campaigns. assembly.
Miloslav Szabo brings a brief history of abortions from the Old Testament through Roman law, the anti-abortion policy of Austria-Hungary, the Slovak state and the period of communism to the statements of the publicist Hanus or the priest Kuffa. It draws from various sources - it quotes Jozef Tisa, Vojtech Tuk, priests, reporters of the periodical press, pediatricians and Trnava workers. The book is supplemented by reproductions of period photographs, paintings and documents.
