This is a collection of insightful and poignant essays about the life and work of Ukrainian writers. Some demonstrated courage and strength of spirit, resisting first the imperial and then the Soviet efforts to destroy or marginalize Ukrainian literature, while others had to give in and serve the authorities until death, wasting their talent and torn between the desire to survive and the desire to remain themselves.
