Estonian women gained the right to vote more than a hundred years ago, before Swedes and Americans. Today, in the 21st century, the position of Estonian women is still worse than their Western sisters in terms of freedom. This is most evident in the limited economic independence. Despite the higher educational level of women, for example, there are still few women among company leaders. Some significant things have changed over the century, and, for example, women are much more involved in politics, but still there are higher demands on girls in school than on boys.
Marianna Mikko has collected her experience, knowledge and vision of the place and role of women in Estonian society in a fascinating book.
