One of the master writers of Turkish literature, Halid Ziya Usakligil, became acquainted with French culture and literature through the plays he watched at the Gedikpasha Theater when he was still a child; this acquaintance was carried to a further level with the love he felt for French lessons while he was a student at Izmir Rusdiyesi. Again during this time, the author made his first translation under the influence of his private tutor Auguste de Jaba; at first he translated the books Jaba selected, but after a while he continued independently and expressed his passion for translation with the following words: “Now, with a mad enthusiasm, running from one to the other, in front of a table full of toys, I started to make translations like a child who was surprised.”
