This is a collection of 12 essays by descendants of Bulgarian military who died in the Battle of Kajmakcalan, an engagement between Bulgarian and Serbian troops in September 1916 during World War I. Historian Plamen Pavlov writes in the introduction that Kajmakcalan has been almost completely erased from the Bulgarian national consciousness due to the silence imposed by politicians. "We ought to be ashamed that we have let the feat of our soldiers at Kajmakcalan fall into oblivion," Prof. Pavlov says. The essays are illustrated with a large number of historic and present-day photos.
