The publication is based on an exhibition created by the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter (UJE), a privately organized, multinational initiative launched in 2008 to strengthen solidarity and understanding between Ukrainians and Jews. The author of the publication and curator of the exhibition is Alti Rodal, co-director of the Ukrainian-Jewish Meeting. The exhibition was shown in 2015 in Toronto at the Schwartz-Reisman Jewish Community Center and at the St. Vladimir's Institute (in the Ontario branch of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada); in Montreal at the branch of the Ukrainian National Association of Canada and at the Jewish Public Library; in Winnipeg at the Center for Ukrainian Culture and Education; in Edmonton at the St. John's Institute in collaboration with the Edmonton Jewish Federation. The first part of this publication highlights the experience of Jews in Ukrainian lands and their interaction with ethnic Ukrainians and other peoples before the partition of Poland (1772-1795). This is followed by a section on two parallel epochs, which examines the cultural and political transformations in the lives of these two stateless peoples and their relations with each other and with other peoples during the "long nineteenth century" (1772-1914) - in the Russian Empire. and under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty.
