Slovak people, romantic idealism, national literature, the Tatras, leaders of the national movement. Are the symbols defining the space of Slovak culture of the long 19th century really so unambiguous and unchanging?
The authors of this book question the unambiguous answers and reread canonized, but also archival and magazine-hidden texts. They show the people as a source of horror and resistance for representatives of the national elite, a romantic subject longing for love and death, everyday life as a sphere in which national identity is formed and reproduced, a woman moving from the passive role of an object of male interest to the position of an author, and the space of the Tatras, usually appropriated as “ours,” unexpectedly glimpsed by the gaze of the Spissh Germans. The book offers both expert studies and extensive "evidence", i.e. a reading list of texts on which the authors rely in their interpretation, as well as reproductions of works of art, documenting parallel processes in the visual arts.
