The book describes the history of public holidays in Saint-Petersburg of the XVIIth – early XVIIIth centuries, the period when the whole mode of life changed to a European style, to new holiday culture being more and more secular by nature in contrast to the pre-Peter I period, which was entirely based on Church calendar. Peter I introduced new state holidays timed to war victories, conclusion of peace agreements, launch of new ships, and visits of honorable people. Thus, a holiday became a method of formation of one’s patriotic feelings and pride for his motherland. The album contains illustrated narration about the holiday history in Saint-Petersburg.
