...revive agriculture in the region. Given that much of it is water-stressed, appropriate and sustainable land and water management practices are vital to achieving this objective. Recognising this, SADC's Land and Water Management Applied Research and Training Programme has convened two scientific symposiums. Held in Lilongwe, Malawi, in February 2006, the inaugural symposium brought together practitioners from 10 participating SADC countries to deliberate on land and water management for sustainable agriculture, and discuss how the most recent research and development advances in land and water management might be made more relevant to policymakers as well as the region small-scale farmers. Edrinnie Lora-Kayambazinthu

...Dowa District of Central Malawi ...
...Malawi is linguistically heterogeneous, with 13 Malawian languages and their numerous dialects spoken within the country. As in most other African countries the language situation in Malawi is characterised by the asymmetrical coexistence of English, the official language; Cicewa, the national language; and 12 other indigenous languages and their varieties. The 1998 population census report indicates that 88 percent of Tumbuka speakers still use Citumbuka for in-group communication. This is a report on a study carried out to explore factors behind the survival of Citumbuka in Dowa district of Central Malawi ...
