The scientific areas discuss in the recent decades that the establishment of the Treven Painting School is in connection with the creation of art in the churches in Arbanasi. But no one until now has tried to search concrete proves and connections of the first Treven painters and by this – the roots of Treven arts. Even more – no one has defined the masters of the older Arbanasi paintings.
The studies in debt of V. Sapundzhieva lead to conclusions in these directions which are very important for the history of the Bulgarian paintings – the book offers a reasonable hypothesis about the origin of the masters from the church of Arbanasi – "St. Athanasius" and thus about the traditions of the first painters from Treven. By taking into account of unknown until now sources, the author offers also her experience about identification of the signed painters from Triavna region and their family relationships. The author has collected and analyzed in detail large number of works from the earliest painters of Treven. The work of the first painters from Treven is put on a wide Balkan context which is made for the first time. Very valuable are also the appendices with results made on the icons from the church of Arbanasi – "St. Athanasius" and the Turkish tax registers for Triavna which are published for the first time.
