The novel "Zhanna the battalioner" reveals the theme of the First World War and the participation of Ukrainians in it, which is not covered too much in the Ukrainian literature. It reflects the historical situation: in 1917, the Russian government decided to use women at the front, forming the so-called female "death battalions". The hero of Shkurupii's novel — Kyiv student Stefan Boyko, who does not give in to propagandistic imperial hysteria, and his beloved Zhanna is an ideal target for propaganda.
