Olexander Dovzhenko (1894-1956) is an outstanding Ukrainian film director and writer. His "The Earth" was included in the list of the twelve best films of the twentieth century and started the trend of "poetic movie". The book includes a number of short stories that reflect the author`s participation in the Great Patriotic War; "Zacharovana Desna", an autobiographical philosophical story about the formation of personality at the junction of the nineteenth-twentieth centuries, and "Shchodennik", both a document of the epoch and the author`s philosophical comprehension of the fate of Ukrainian people, the history of the nation, the events of the middle of the twentieth century.
