The volume consists of the memories of eleven participants of the independence movement. These accounts testify to the diversity of women's activities on the eve of and during the Great War: they talk about activities in shooting teams and the Women's League, in the Supreme National Committee, the Legions and the Polish Military Organization. At that time, the authors and their companions were not only organizers and clerks, but also paper distributors, couriers, saboteurs and intelligence agents, some of them serving as legionnaires disguised as men. Autobiographical narratives, selected and compiled by Kamil Piskala and Marta Sikorska-Kowalska, create a collective portrait of self-sacrificing female fighters, and allow us to look at the history of the rebirth of the Polish state from a new perspective. They remind us of the merits of the "silent heroines" of our independence.
