The monograph highlights factors, forms and results of health promotion of the Russian Orthodox Church among the rural population of Tomsk province in the second half of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th centuries. The range of duties assigned by the government to the Orthodox clergy in the field of sanitary enlightenment and medical work has been revealed. Forms of training people for such work in rural settlements by the religious department of Tomsk diocese are characterized. The paper described the work of bishops, rural and monastic clergy contributing to the formation of the scientific medicine in rural areas and sanitary and hygienic enlightenment of rural population and identified the main historical stages of implementation of this activity in the diocese.
