This short book, written by the chronicler of the Bulgarian national revolution Zaharii Stoyanov, was the first biography of the nation's great freedom-fighter Vasil Levski (1837-1873), revered as the Apostle of Liberty. First published in 1884, it was arguably the most popular of all Bulgarian books up until then: it sold out in a matter of days. Over the years, it was praised and criticized in equal measure. Today's Bulgarians don't know about it. It has run seven editions, the latest ones in the 1980s, and nowadays it is a very rare book.
