Valia lives in a village in Poltava region. She has a mother and stepfather, as well as younger brothers and sisters who need to be looked after. Valia does not remember her father: he died in World War II. The girl’s stepfather is the head of the collective farm, who is terribly afraid of checks “from the center”, because after them the family can be sent to Siberia. The man wants to destroy Valia’s birth certificate, because it contains information about her real father. But what’s wrong with Valia’s father?
This is a story about how in the year of Stalin’s death the main character gradually learns the truth not only about her father, but also about what the recent war was like: about the aggressive plans of the USSR and the merciless attitude of the command towards Soviet soldiers.
