Using the example of the Ukrainian component (from many nations), the book presents some pictures of Ural life in different eras. The main narrative is dedicated to the great migration of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, a significant part of which were Ukrainians - for many of them the Southern Urals became their new homeland. The events in the lives of ordinary working people further reflect the short history of the country called the USSR, and partially show the reasons why that country, having existed for such a short time, disintegrated into national republics.
