The book gives a detailed panorama of the development of Ukrainian translation from the Princely period to the present day. Particular attention is paid to translators and translators of the XIX-XX centuries, whose activities, in addition to literary, had a clear nation and creative direction, contributing to a clear line between Ukrainians and the dominant nations of the empires that included Ukrainian lands. This role of the Ukrainian translation was not unique: a similar function was performed by the German translation of the second half of the 18th century, during the domination of French language and culture among the upper classes of divided Germany, or the Catalan translation of the 20th century. However, it is the history of Ukrainian translation that is filled with the greatest number of dramatic plots, and it is the fate of leading Ukrainian translators that has been much more tragic than that of their counterparts from other countries who have also experienced foreign political or cultural domination. After all, the role of Ukrainian translation in the processes of modern nation-building has proved to be higher than the nation-building role of translation in Germany or Catalonia due to a number of historical circumstances.
