Mito Ankov's memoirs highlight the long and thorny path of Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule. Ankov chaired the Revolutionary Committee in Vratsa, in the northwest of present-day Bulgaria. He accompanied revolutionary leader Vasil Levski and his aide Dimitar Obshti during their tours in which they tried to rally support for the national liberation movement. Later, Ankov joined the Bulgarian volunteer troops that helped the Russian army in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. It was this war that brought about Bulgaria's liberation. Ankov showed heroism during crucial battles. His authentic account sheds light on the spirit of the National Revival Period and the decisive role of the Bulgarian volunteers in the war.
