The work of Alexei Maksheyev is a detailed account of his expeditions to the Kazakh steppe and Turkestan in 1848, 1851 and 1853. The author, a lieutenant general and military topographer, describes the development of the region by the Russian Empire, the construction of fortifications, the supply of troops, military campaigns and relations with the Kazakhs, their life and traditions. The central place is occupied by the story of the storming of the Ak-Mechet fortress (1853).
