This is an essayistic book by Plamen Darakchiev, a Bulgarian dissident who played a part in the democratic changes in his country during the early 1990s after the end of the Cold War. The book combines current affairs analysis, memoirs and portraits of figures of the Transition Period. The title, "Transition DNA", highlights the interconnection between individuals and institutions, which resembles the double-stranded molecule of DNA. Individuals are normally torn between selfishness and altruism, while institutions epitomize the rules and the values associated with ethics and law. If the "individual strand" is damaged, it is usually a concrete individual who bears the consequences. If the "institutional strand" is impaired, the problem affects all individuals.
