Jonas Zdanys was born in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1950, a few months after his parents arrived in the United States from a United Nations-sponsored camp for Lithuanian refugees. He is a graduate of Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in English literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is the author of twenty books, eighteen of them collections of his own poetry, in both English and Lithuanian, and of his translations of Lithuanian literature into English. He has also received a number of prizes and book awards for his own poetry and for his translations of Lithuanian poetry.
