During the First World War, the opposing parties deployed aviation for the first time to a significant extent. Austria-Hungary was no exception, young and courageous men from all parts of the multinational empire served in the imperial and royal air units. They were represented by natives from the territory of today's Slovakia, many of whom made a significant mark in the history of air warfare. They were among the seasoned fighters, the so-called flying aces, commanders of successful air units or true pioneers of aviation. "Our" airmen fought, won or died under the flag of the monarchy in various parts of Europe - on the so-called Serbian, Russian, Romanian or Balkan front, but especially on the Italian battlefield. The publication charts the fates of dozens of pilots and flight observers, primarily on the basis of documents stored in foreign archives, in Austria and Italy.
