The book tracks the appearance and evolution of the traditions of amateur art over the three centuries, starting from "keen comedians" up to artistic theater, from the early performances of ecclesiastical academy to numerous contemporary little theaters. The author makes a pioneer attempt in systematization and summarization of historical material. The insufficiently-studied problem of amateur theatrical creative activities is treated as a part of general development of Russian society from the XVIIIth to the XXth century.
