The book is about two mythical races: giants and dwarfs. The anthropometric hyperbole emphasizes the fact that the two races belonged to a world in which anomaly was the norm, even when it came to size. This topsy-turvy world was governed by force and perfidy, its inhabitants committed crimes not only against people but also against gods. Traces of these mythical races are found in the religion of the ancient Thracians. The Thracians themselves are said to have originated from giants. Pallini, the westernmost prong of the Chalkidiki Peninsula in today's northern Greece, provided a setting for gigantomachia; giant bones were discovered there after floods, and the rocky landscape was shaped by boulders which the giants threw at the gods.
