By the late 1980s, it became clear that the communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe were doomed. The old and the new elites needed a new form of dialogue: the roundtable. It marked the beginning of the transition to democracy throughout the entire Eastern Bloc. The roundtable was a way to institutionalize the democratic changes. In Bulgaria, it had specific characteristics. The participants in the Bulgarian roundtable decided to convene a Grand National Assembly in order to work out a new Constitution, thus paving the country's unique way to democracy. Historians say that events cannot be viewed objectively until at least 20 or 30 years after they occur. It seems that the time has come to subject these events to impartial political analysis.
