This is a book about the beginnings of Latvian politics. About what our first politicians thought and wrote. Latvians first found their place in modern politics in front of the Baltic German elite and the Russian Empire, both of which claimed dominion in the Baltics. Between the two colonial factors, the first Latvian thinkers formulated ideas on how the nation could best fit into the politics of modern Europe. These ideas ranged from conservative, liberal and socialist.
