The book sheds light not only on the history of a small fort in the Caspian region but also on the role of the region in general, its place and significance in the tsarist politics. The outstanding Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko served as a soldier at the Novopetrovski fort. The book is based on some rare archival materials.
