Liliana Mikhailova takes us back to a time when exploits in the name of the Fatherland were part of everyday life, a period in the 19th century when the Bulgarian people struggled to overthrow the Ottoman rule. Back then, rebellion was, for some people, a way to earn a place in history, but for others it was a way to get rich. While the protagonist Elena tries to make sense of the holy struggle of the "apostles of liberty", her father sells defective rifles to those same martyrs. Freedom versus wealth... Spirit versus matter... Daughter versus father... A story with two endings: one resembling the outcome of an ancient drama, the other being more of a ballad-like epilog in a contemporary classic. A wonderful book!
