In May 1913, the Bulgarians in the historical region of Eastern Thrace were liberated from Ottoman Turkish rule. Just a month later, their joy turned into a nightmare. As Bulgarian soldiers fought and died on the battlefields of the Second Balkan War, the Ottoman army invaded the region and subjected the peaceful population to persecution and extermination. Hundreds of thousands of Bulgarians fled the horrors, leaving their homes and livelihood behind, and tens of thousands, including women and children, were brutally killed. The tragedy was enormous but it was somehow overshadowed by the so-called First National Catastrophe of Bulgaria caused by the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913.
