This is the first of two volumes of a concise history of Bulgaria, written by renowned historian Ivan Ilchev, rector of Sofia University for two consecutive terms between 2007 and 2015 and a Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Ilchev says: "There are plenty of histories of Bulgaria. But I always felt that the type of history which the Bulgarians deserve - not the expert historians but the people who are fond of their nation's past - was missing... It had to be a history that catches your interest, a history which is at least partly honest and balanced, a history that reads like a novel."
