Everything in this book really happened. It is preserved in the ancestral memory of two Bulgarian families, and through the fates of the main characters Captain Nikola Krastev and Georgi Golomehov, not only the tragic fate of the "former people" in the earthly hell of communism is revealed, but also the moral portrait of an entire generation is painted, which managed to preserve and carry its values intactly into the future. On the pages of the novel, in an intimate light, unknown to the general public, the images of Dimcho Debelyanov, Colonel, Vladimir Serafimov - the liberator of the Rhodope Mountains, Tsar Boris III, Dimitar Talev, Vladimir Dimitrov - the Master, Elin Pelin, Atanas Mihov - the first Bulgarian impressionist, and others come to life. In the process of writing, lost and forgotten memories seem to come to light of their own accord. Among them, the most distinctive is the unknown portrait of Nikola from the Belene camp, drawn in pencil on the packaging of a parcel by another camp inmate, discovered 60 years after his death.
This exciting literary saga of Bulgarian history (and Macedonia, inextricably linked to it) in the last 125 years is also a chronicle of the difficult victories of good, of unwavering faith and of the bright sadness for Debelyanov, which does not fade. The suffered testament of the victims of communism is that the only resistance to evil is in humility and the refusal to seek retribution. Only in this way do we not perpetuate evil through ourselves.
