Ferdinand I was one of the most contradictory figures in Bulgaria's modern history. His reign was associated with major achievements of the Bulgarians such as the declaration of independence in 1908, but also two of the worst moments in the nation's history, the so-called national catastrophes of 1913 and 1918. Ferdinand occupied the throne for 31 years between 1887 and 1918, which puts him among the top 10 of the longest-ruling Bulgarian monarchs. He brought the spirit of modern Europe into the country, built palaces and transfigured the capital Sofia. He contributed to the Bulgarian economic miracle, helped upgrade the armed forces and made a sincere attempt to solve the national question.
