In his Philosophical History, the Neoplatonist Damascius (458-after 538 CE) vividly describes the circle of late antique intellectuals he encountered before becoming the head of the Athenian school of Neoplatonism. The protagonist of Damascius's narrative is his teacher Isidore, a unique Alexandrian thinker of the Socratic type. The vivid portraits of his contemporaries are complemented in the History by descriptions of the cultural and political life of Alexandria and Athens.
