The book is based on the personal memoirs of its protagonist, Vladimir Efimovich Kaplan, who was born in 1936 in Kyiv; lost his father in early childhood, found himself in the maelstrom of war, surviving evacuation, German occupation and a concentration camp. Only by the age of ten did he learn to read, but he was able to get a good education and even defend his dissertation. He is the discoverer of several mineral deposits in the Urals and one of the first in the country to use personal computers in the daily work of engineers. The pages of the memoirs of a witness and eyewitness contain scenes from the life of Soviet people under the German occupation, a concentration camp and post-war settlement in Eastern Europe; sketches from childhood, army and student life; details of the organization of work processes, personal and social life of geologists, teachers and scientists of the USSR. This book is about the ability to endure trials and survive; about faith in yourself and trust in loved ones; about true love and sincere joy.
