The author offers the reader an insight into the personality of Ivan Derer, who was one of the leading Slovak Czechoslovakists and to the end of his life espoused the political legacy of Tomas G. Masaryk. Derer was already involved in social and political life before the First World War. He became a signatory of the Martin Declaration and held several ministerial positions in the Czechoslovak government during the interwar period. After the dissolution of the Second Czechoslovak Republic, he lived in Prague. In August 1944 he was arrested and imprisoned in Pankrac and Terezin. After the Second World War, he served as President of the Supreme Court until the rise of the Communist monopoly of power. From 1954 to 1955 he was imprisoned by the communist regime. The monograph not only analyses Derer's life and political career, but also pays attention to his opinions and contemporary testimonies, providing inspiration to recall with him some of the political personalities and important events of our history.
