Having been in existence since the mid-19th century, Serbian written heritage in the United States today seems like a hidden heritage: scattered in various American and Serbian institutions and abroad, often in private homes and apartments, mostly unlisted and undigitized, the precious material is deteriorating every day due to the poor conditions in which it is kept, primarily due to the equal carelessness of Serbs in America and Serbs abroad.
Faced with a specific cultural suicide, the authors of this monograph have launched a project of protection and linguistic analysis of Serbian written heritage, but also of diachronic and synchronic study of its language. This project involves several related processes: collection, listing, adequate preservation, digitization (at least at the level of high-quality scanning), public presentation and, finally, scientific processing of the material from the perspective of various sciences, of which this time we will only talk about the linguistic approach.
